I guess there's never too much of a good thing - right? Which would explain The Short Second Life. We have here the 'between parentheses' - a chapter, at best, expanded slightly into a novella.
Bree's a blood-thirsty new-born vampire, is a likeable and intelligent teenager, who struggles to emerge a strong character in her own right, but I'm sorry, there's just no way in hell she's coming out of Bella's shadow. Even if she has her own doomed love story and tragic as it is that you know the way things'll end up even before you start reading.
This one's strictly for the Twihards and may even be incorporated into the movie. I did enjoy it, yes (see Twihard ref above!) and it didn't take more than a couple of hours of low intensity reading to get through. But unlike the main four books, which I devoured and which left me thirsting for more (how many bad blood-related puns can you find here?!) I'm not left with all that much at all.
A snippet, a scene, an expanded footnote, at best. Now a closer look at Carlisle, by all means, the history of the werewolves and vampires, I would also read, not to mention the project Meyer scrapped because part of her MS was leaked online. Sigh.
By the way the timing of this release is impeccable - whetting my appetite for the next movie, that's out later this month!
Tell us what you think right here... Oh and if for some bizarre reason you're not channeling the spirit of a teenage girl, give the entire saga a miss my dears... and don't go off on a rant into what bad writing/ plot / style/ substance it is.
